1973年カリフォルニア・サンタバーバラ生まれ。父はレジェンド・ビッグウェーバーのパット・カレン、兄は3度の世界チャンピョンに輝いたトム・カレンと、一流サーフィン一家に生まれ育ち、自身も18歳でプロサーファーとなる。旅をライフワークとし、主にアイルランドやノルウェイなどの極寒の地を中心に世界を旅するコールドウォーター・スペシャリスト。旅した世界をシンプルなフレーミングとナチュラルな色と光で写真に撮り続けている。作品は主に国内外のサーフィン誌などで取り上げられ、近年ではホテルクラスカでの個展やグリーンルームフェスティバルでのインスタレーションで本国を始め日本でも注目を集めている。

Brought up in a family with a legendary big wave pioneer and surfboard shaper as a father and 3 times world champion as an older brother, Joe's career began as a professional surfer. Few years later, he picked up photography, and soon his clean, simple framing with a touch of classic fine art style is to be recognized in many surf magazines and art shows.
